The 6th edition of Kurdistan’s major annual Conference for the Oil & Gas Industry took place on 5-7 December 2016 at the Hilton Park Lane, London. Welcoming over 300 delegates, the event was a great success highlighting how the Region is embarking on a huge development for its oil and gas industry by establishing strong partnerships with the industry and thus increasing knowledge transfer.

The Conference emphasized the Region’s commitment to dealing with challenges and the lively discussions focused on finding innovative solutions during challenging economic times in areas such as gas processing, electricity, financial transparency and infrastructure security.

We hope to see you again in 2017! The next edition of the Kurdistan-Iraq Oil & Gas Conference will take place in December 2017.

2016 Conference Highlights Included:

KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani:

  • Reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to vital economic reforms and asked the oil industry to continue investing in Kurdistan
  • Said international independent audit of oil and gas will increase citizen engagement
  • Announced: “Along with the World Bank, we have prepared a comprehensive roadmap for structural reform in the Kurdistan region.” The reform plan includes a modernisation of the financial system, social protection strategy, and essential changes to the electricity sector to improve the service and reduce massive subsidies


Rt Hon. Iain Duncan Smith, former leader of the UK Conservative Party and this year’s Gala Dinner Guest Speaker:
“We are proud to call you our allies, trading partners and fellow democrats… Britain is proud to support the Government of Iraq and the KRG in this battle.”


KRG Minister of Nartural Resources Ashti Hawrami:

  • Announced 20 blocks will be open for bidding in 2017 with contract terms focused on continued win-win.
  • “Even at an oil price of $30 to $40 dollars per barrel, Kurdistan’s blocks are still viable thanks to the Ceyhan supply route and relatively low production cost.”
  • Thanked the international oil companies for their commitment to Kurdistan and said that KRG would continue to make payments. “We are honouring payments to international oil companies despite the Kirkuk oil halt and IS attacks, which had two months’ impact… if companies feel that they are getting paid late, please remember that our revenues also pay our Peshmerga forces.”
  • Said KRG seeks investors in petrochemical plants in technologies that can use partially processed gas


Ms Esra Dogan Grajover, Acting Deputy Director General at Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“Turkey hopes for the swift development of KRG and Iraq’s gas fields, which are vital for Turkey’s energy security.”


Saad Sadollah, Commercial & Business Development Advisor, Ministry of Natural Resources, KRG:
Stated that among gas suppliers to Turkey and Europe, the Kurdistan Region would be the 3rd or 4th largest supplier in terms of reserves


Murat Ozgul, CEO of Genel Energu PLc.:
Reiterated that the Kurdistan Region would provide the cheapest gas to Turkey compared to other suppliers


Ian MacDonald, Vice President for Chevron:
Said Chevron is still optimistic about Kurdistan Region which has created stability and offers acceptable terms


The Post Conference Critical Infrastructure Protection Seminar, held under Chatham House Rule, highlighted how the economic growth of the region is reliant on the improvement of security and how Corporate Social Responsibility goes hand in hand with improved security in local communities.
